In this episode, pioneering child psychologist Laverne Antrobus meets 6-year-old Demi and her 29-year-old mum Lisa, who live with Lisa’s parents, Sharon and Pete. The family agrees that “Good Demi” is a little angel – sweet and affectionate, but when “Bad Demi” takes over, she becomes extremely violent, and it’s Lisa who bears the brunt of it. To find out how she can help, Laverne joins them at home. The first thing she notices is that it’s not clear who’s in charge: Lisa or Sharon. She wants to raise Lisa’s confidence as a mum, which will mean Sharon taking a step back – tough for both of them. She’s also keen to find out what’s behind Good and Bad Demi. Trying to understand why Lisa seems resigned to being hurt by her daughter, she uncovers past trauma. Is Demi perhaps expressing the feelings that Lisa thinks she’s buried? Laverne leaves the family to practice their new parenting techniques, but things don’t go smoothly, and she needs to think of a new strategy. Sharon is distraught: she doesn’t trust Laverne and believes Demi isn’t just naughty but has a medical problem. First, Laverne must help Lisa realize that having fun with her child is also being a good parent, and she finally understands Sharon’s mistrust. On her final visit, Laverne learns that Demi is improving and is much less violent towards Lisa, but a visit from her cousins has been a trigger for bad behavior in the past. They’re coming to play that afternoon – will they push her too far, or will she be able to take responsibility for her behavior without blaming Bad Demi?
