In this episode, pioneering child psychologist Laverne Antrobus meets 8-year-old Ioan and his family: mum Emma, dad Adrian and his older sister, Sorrell. Emma and Adrian are at their wits’ end when it comes to dealing with Ioan – he’s difficult during the day, but getting him to bed can take 6 hours. Ioan bangs the walls and screams for his mum – but when she restrains him in bed, he gets violent and bites her. When Laverne comes to help the family, she’s worried both by Ioan’s violence and the restraint that Emma’s using – so she institutes a new bedtime routine. But she also discovers that Ioan’s violence is dividing his parents, and their marriage is in crisis. Laverne identifies that Ioan’s stuck at an early developmental stage where he rejects his father and only wants his mother, so Laverne has to find out why Adrian’s so absent from his son’s life and what in Emma’s past may have affected her view of the role fathers play in their children’s lives. Laverne leaves the family to practice the new bedtime routine, but she’s worried about how much time Ioan’s spending alone in his room. When Laverne returns, she helps Adrian strengthen his relationship with his son by getting him out of the house and doing outdoor activities. On her final visit, Laverne finds out that Ioan’s bedtimes have improved to the extent that he and his sister have spent the night with their grandmother so that Emma and Adrian can go on a date. But before she leaves them, Laverne’s determined to show them some clips of what bedtimes used to be like – how will Emma and Adrian react? And will they decide never to restrain Ioan again?
