Death is a frightening, unsettling prospect for us all. Myths and legends help explore those anxieties. But they tell us about more than mortal fear alone. For in a culture's tales of death, we can see what it is they value in life. Explored in this final episode is the ancient Greek myth of Antigone, who defied the laws of her land to bury her dead brother, and the most beloved and perfect of the Norse gods, Balder, whose fate it was still to die. The apocalyptic flood narratives found so frequently in myth are given a new dimension. Our enduring fascination with the undead is elaborated on by tracing the history of the vampire back to its roots in Eastern Europe and asking why these dark figures still exert such a hold on our imagination.
