Aviation is experiencing a new era: the race for speed. Breaking the sound barrier becomes a global goal: French, Americans, English, Russians, and Germans... Everybody wants to get there first.
This requires more powerful propulsion engines and jet engines than ever before. And every attempt generates hope. Englishman Geoffrey de Havilland will pay with his life: his plane disintegrates as it reaches the sound barrier.
Finally, the American Chuck Yaeger will be the first to break it in October 1947, barely 50 years after the birth of aviation! John Derry and Roger Carpenter follow him, risking their lives in the process.
Meanwhile, mass transport is in full bloom. Airplanes increase in both size and capacity. The seaplanes industry continues its development, thanks to huge investments from Howard Hughes.
The distances traveled are no longer experiments but what will be called long-haul distances. New York has never been closer to Europe.
