This journey begins at Avignon, once home to medieval Popes and the site of a famous bridge across the River Rhône. It then crosses the Alpilles Mountains, exploring beautiful hilltop villages before arriving at Arles, one of the most important cities in Roman Gaul. To the south on the coast is Marseilles, which has a history stretching back to the ancient Greeks. It is the second biggest city in France and its most important port on the Mediterranean.
Flying east along the Côte d'Azur, also known as the French Riviera, is one of the best-known resorts – Saint Tropez – the playground of the rich and famous. The final location is Monaco, one of the smallest countries in the world and also one of the richest due to its lenient tax laws. But perhaps best known for its Formula One Grand Prix.
