About Ms.Shoshanna Cohen

Ms. Cohen was nominated by a parent. Here’s what the parent had to say about Ms. Cohen:

Ms Cohen is the Art teacher for our Title 1 Elementary School, in Seattle's most diverse neighborhood: White Center Heights Elementary. With ~615 students in our Elementary school, 85% of our student body population are students of color, 86% live below the poverty line, and 83% of our students speak a different language at home than english.

Ms Cohen works joyfully to promote a safe, healthy, fun environment for all the students in our school. With a passion for more than just art, Ms Cohen strives to incorporate STEAM learning into her classroom: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The kids just love her special magic so much, every aspect of her classroom is intriguing, from the fish tanks with tortoise and salmon spawns, to the garden beds outside the classroom filled with herbs that she has planted with her students.

She works every day after class to offer free after-school clubs, so that the students have an opportunity to explore and continue their learning. Ms Cohen's after school clubs include: mural painting, gardening, soccer, basketball, carnival club, and more. She often spends her weekends at school with the students working on event-based projects, and she certainly spends her own money picking up supplies for her classroom and clubs.

Her goal this past year has been to create a Family Hub, a place called the Family Resource Center, staffed by volunteer kids and which offers our community a place to stop in and get household necessities like diapers, wipes, canned food, toilet paper, etc. Ms Cohen is the life of our school, she's super creative, everyone is included and cared for, she fosters independence and growth, while fostering the children's genuine curiosity for the world.

I have 3 kids in the district and they have all adored her. A quote from one of my children (age 10) to describe Ms Cohen: "She's super fun, and she doesn't leave out any kid, we all get a chance to participate. Plus, I know I can go to her for help anytime."

As the winner of our Teacher Appreciation Campaign, Ms. Cohen will receive a $2,500 prize, and the entire staff of White Center Heights Elementary School will receive free annual memberships to MagellanTV. This prize is our way of saying thank you to Ms. Cohen and all the amazing educators out there who are shaping the future of our world.
